Coffee Can portfolio
quiet, steady compounders
Companies that grew sales at least 10% and earned ROCE of at least 15% in every year on record.
On 6 Nov 2026, the Coffee Can portfolio screen finds 79 companies on NSE and BSE. To pass, a company needs: Minimum sales growth all years at least 10%; Minimum ROCE all years at least 15%; Years of data at least 4; and 1 more condition. The largest industry groups are Automobile and Auto Components (18) and Capital Goods (16) out of 79 companies, with a median market cap of ₹9,845 Cr and a median P/E of 33.3×. Sorted by Average return on capital employed 3Years (highest first), the first three are ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company, GK Energy and Waaree Renewable Technologies; 1,098 other companies could not be tested because data was missing.
The Coffee Can approach, popularised in India by Saurabh Mukherjea, looks for businesses that compound quietly: revenue growth of at least 10% and return on capital employed of at least 15% in every single year, over a long stretch.
The original screen tests ten years. Our data covers the last four to five financial years, so this is a shorter test: a company must clear both bars in every year we have, needs at least four consecutive years of data, and fails if any year is missing.
ROCE here is EBIT ÷ (total assets − current liabilities). Banks and NBFCs don’t have a meaningful ROCE, so they are left out. As in the original, companies below ₹1,000 Cr of market cap are left out.
